Being an exchange student is a gift in itself. Not only do you get to make friends and new families, but you also learn to find who you are, as you learn to become your own person. One of the best parts of being an exchange student is going out with the other exchange students, rotex, and rotary events (of course this depends on the student). Every exchange is different, some easier than others, oftentimes it relies on luck and mindset, however even though every exchange is so very different, the other exchange students are the only people in the world who understand how you feel and what you are going through. You can go to the Rotarians, families, friends, or even the people in other countries, but no one understands you more than the people surrounding you through the same experience. 

We as a group of “outbounds” in district 2042 were fortunate enough to see the beautiful city of Genova. We were able to see many alluring sites, like the Repubbliche Marinare, casa di Cristoforo Colombo, le famiglie Spinola e Doria, Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, porto di Genova, l'acquario, la Piazza Ducale. We started the day strong with a short walk to the port, where we learned a few things about Genova with speeches written by fellow students. Then we all entered the aquarium with no real expectations. I was told it is one of the best aquariums in Italy, while others told me it was a waste of time. After we entered I was lucky enough to see penguins, dolphins, fish, starfish, stingrays, frogs, and so much more. I enjoyed the aquarium and I really enjoyed being able to explore it with my rotary family. 

After going through the aquarium we all went to lunch. I was told that in Genova the pesto and focaccia are the best so of course I had to try it. I tried focaccia with cheese, along with another made from chickpeas, and then, of course, the pesto. When I say that was one of the best pastas with pesto that I have ever tried in my entire life, I am not kidding. Everyone else had time to get gelato, I was not fortunate enough for that. However, I did try some, definitely the best gelato I have tried in Italy.

After the food we set off for the journey to see different buildings and sites, we saw the beautiful Cathedral of San Lorenzo and were very fortunate to see the city from above. We then went to the Piazza Ducale. Now here’s the embarrassing story, each of us exchange students were asked to write a quick speech on a different part of Genova. A really cute idea to get us to learn about the area and history of the city, being the smart human that I am, I did research on the Piazza Ducale… of Venice, and we were in Genova. It is what it is. We came up with a little switch on the spot and our district chair was very kind and accommodating with our mistake. 

I am in love with all the fountains you find here in Italy, there were some in Florence, Milan, and even Genova. The day we went was a beautiful day with a bright sun and cool breeze. I was so grateful to be accompanied by my other exchange friends, we all have this freeing mindset to live our lives as fully and brightly as possible. Two other students and I decided to go for a skip and laugh our hearts out together. I am so fortunate for the experiences that through this exchange I am given; even more thankful for the friendships and family like bonds I have here.

Essere uno studente in scambio è un dono in sé. Non solo ti fai degli amici e delle nuove famiglie, ma impari anche a scoprire chi sei, mentre impari a diventare una persona a sé stante. Una delle cose migliori dell'essere uno studente in scambio è uscire con gli altri studenti in scambio, rotex ed eventi rotativi (ovviamente questo dipende dallo studente). Ogni scambio è diverso, alcuni più facili di altri, spesso si basa sulla fortuna e sulla mentalità, tuttavia anche se ogni scambio è così diverso, gli altri studenti in scambio sono le uniche persone al mondo che capiscono come ti senti e cosa stai attraversando. Puoi andare dai Rotariani, dalle famiglie, dagli amici o persino dalle persone di altri paesi, ma nessuno ti capisce più delle persone che ti circondano attraverso la stessa esperienza.

Noi, come gruppo di "outbound" nel distretto 2042, siamo stati abbastanza fortunati da vedere la splendida città di Genova. Abbiamo potuto vedere molti siti affascinanti, come le Repubbliche Marinare, la casa di Cristoforo Colombo, le famiglie Spinola e Doria, la Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, il porto di Genova, l'acquario, la Piazza Ducale. Abbiamo iniziato la giornata alla grande con una breve passeggiata al porto, dove abbiamo imparato alcune cose su Genova con discorsi scritti da altri studenti. Poi siamo entrati tutti nell'acquario senza vere aspettative, mi è stato detto che è uno dei migliori acquari in Italia, mentre altri mi hanno detto che era una perdita di tempo. Dopo essere entrati ho avuto la fortuna di vedere pinguini, delfini, pesci, stelle marine, razze, rane e molto altro ancora. Mi è piaciuto l'acquario e mi è piaciuto molto poter esplorare con la mia famiglia rotary. 

Dopo aver attraversato l'acquario siamo andati tutti a pranzo. Mi hanno detto che a Genova il pesto e la focaccia sono i migliori, quindi ovviamente ho dovuto provarli. Ho provato la focaccia con il formaggio, insieme a un'altra fatta con i ceci e poi, ovviamente, il pesto. Quando dico che è stata una delle migliori paste al pesto che abbia mai provato in tutta la mia vita, non sto scherzando. Tutti gli altri hanno avuto il tempo di prendere un gelato, io non sono stata abbastanza fortunata. Tuttavia, ne ho assaggiato un po', sicuramente il miglior gelato che abbia mai provato in Italia.

Dopo il cibo siamo partiti per il viaggio per vedere diversi edifici e siti, abbiamo visto la bellissima Cattedrale di San Lorenzo e siamo stati molto fortunati a vedere la città dall'alto. Poi siamo andati a Piazza Ducale. Ora ecco la storia imbarazzante, a ognuno di noi studenti in scambio è stato chiesto di scrivere un breve discorso su una parte diversa di Genova. Un'idea davvero carina per farci conoscere la zona e la storia della città, essendo l'essere umano intelligente che sono, ho fatto delle ricerche su Piazza Ducale... di Venezia, ed eravamo a Genova. Abbiamo inventato un piccolo scambio sul posto e il nostro presidente di distretto è stato molto gentile e accomodante con il nostro errore.

Sono innamorata di tutte le fontane che si trovano qui in Italia, ce n'erano alcune a Firenze, Milano e persino a Genova. Il giorno in cui siamo andati era una bellissima giornata con un sole splendente e una brezza fresca. Ero così grata di essere accompagnata dai miei altri amici di scambio, abbiamo tutti questa mentalità liberatoria per vivere le nostre vite il più pienamente e brillantemente possibile. Io e altri due studenti abbiamo deciso di fare un salto e ridere a crepapelle insieme. Sono così fortunata per le esperienze che mi vengono date attraverso questo scambio; ancora più grata per le amicizie e i legami familiari che ho qui.
